This necklace is handmade in Michelle Hartney’s Chicago studio by carefully folding a small sheet of sterling silver into nine folds—creating a layered triangle, which mimics the nine folds into which hospital gowns were folded during the artist’s recent MOTHER’S RIGHT performance. For the project, Hartney sewed 1,200 hospital gowns—one for every woman who died during childbirth in the United States in 2013. More information about the project can be found here.
Why we love it? Because you’ll have a beautiful necklace, with a meaningful story.
